GENERAL CLEANING TIPS
Before ever touching a new piercing, always make sure to thoroughly wash your hands (including under your fingernails). Rinse off hands and apply a small amount of anti-microbial soap to jewelry and remove all crusty material from the jewelry (it is impossible to clean correctly until jewelry is free of “crusties”. Rinse off jewelry. Again, add soap to jewelry and gently rotate the jewelry though your piercing with the soap to clean the inside of your piercing. Rinse well. Make sure to rinse all soap from inside the piercing, too! Dry the piercing and then repeat the cleaning process with either sea salt (a pinch of sea salt mixed with 2oz warm water) or an aerosol saline solution. Clean your piercing three times a day.
DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING
Never touch the piercing until you have washed your hands thoroughly. Touching a piercing with dirty hands is the #1 reason for infection. Do not use any other cleanser. Consult your piercing for other cleaning methods if necessary. Do not allow another person’s bodily fluids to come in contact with your new piercing for 4-6 weeks. This means no oral/sexual contact, sharing of straws, spoons, forks, etc. Do not soak this piercing for at least 6 weeks (this includes baths, hot tubs, and swimming in any body of water). Do not wear tigh clothing against your piercing. Do not apply makeup ¼ of an inch around the piercing for 6 weeks.
ORAL CLEANING
The cleaner your mouth is, the quicker the healing process is. During the swelling period (usually the the first two to six weeks, depending on the piercing), gently suck on ice for 15-20 minutes every hour. Rinse thoroughly with Tech2000/Biotene as instructed by the piercer (usually six times a day). After three days, begin to brush your tongue or the inside of your lip with a soft bristled, new toothbrush. This will help remove mucous, bacteria, and dead skin from around the piercing. Remember to come in as instructed by your piercer for adjustments or downsizes!
DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING (Oral Piercings)
Do not smoke. It is very dirty and causes unnecessary swelling. Do not eat/drink anything that is hot, spicy, or contains citrus for four weeks. Do not eat seafood for four weeks. Seafood sometimes contains iodine, which may hinder your healing process. Do not drink alcohol for at least one week. Absolutely no kissing or oral sex for at least four weeks. Your piercing piercing is a direct line to your bloodstream. In this day and age of STDs, be smart and be safe. Please, do not put yourself at risk!
